Keeping up with the Salingers

Various Family Traditions

  • Growing up, Eleanor and Amy would make breakfast/brunch on Saturdays while Richard and Carrie would make breakfast on Sundays
  • Since Richard's family lives in towns nearby Pleasant Port, usually the family gathered at his home or the home of one of his siblings. 2007 was the first year that Thanksgiving dinner was held at "Amy's House".
  • In recent years, for Christmas, it's not uncommon for The Salingers to spend one day or the other up in Vermont with Eleanor's family.
  • In the past, when everyone was home on Christmas Eve, they would stay up all night together playing games or eating food and and open gifts at midnight.
  • Amy's mother usually puts sprigs of pine in the outside flower pots and evergreen wreaths and what not all around the house. Amy has tried to continue this, but she admits that she's not as skilled at gardening. Other decorations include placing lit red candles in the windows on Christmas Eve which are decorated with holly and ivy.
  • Christmas dinner is usually eaten in the early afternoon. Earlier years had it very similar in menu to Thanksgiving, but over the years the meat has been anything from turkey to ham to even leg of lamb.
  • Amy's mother would bake a lot of holiday themed cookies or cupcakes growing up and even though Amy would help her quite a bit through the years, she's just now starting to do it herself. Her favorite cookies to make are candy cane cookies.

Random Facts and Information:

  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Stanford; currently teaches Psychology and Sociology at the same.
  • Currently lives in Palo Alto
  • Was engaged to Eliza's father and they had planned to marry in January of 2006 so Amy could be at the wedding. It wasn't going to be a big wedding---just an intimate ceremony with family and friends---but she left him at the altar when she found out that he cheated on her. She promptly changed Eliza's last name.

Eliza Marie Salinger

Random Facts and Information:

  • Commonly heard saying: "wif me" and "c'mon" and "play me?"
  • Named after Eleanor's mother.

Lady Dog

Chillin' Lady Baby Lady Curious Lady

Random Facts and Information:

  • She can be amused by a game of catch for hours, with anything from a ball to a silly piece of paper.
  • Lady is the most docile dog one might ever meet. In situations with other dogs who might have more Alpha mentalities, she seems all too happy to be submissive.
  • Loves walks in the forest or on trails and because she is well trained, she is able to roam unleased.
  • Whether it is based on routine or because Lady is just a very smart dog is debatable, but she seems to know what day of the week it is. This was cultivated from the years of Richard going to get the mail or into town for the paper (something Amy still does).
