Ryan has a long narrow face with prominent cheekbones which, combined with his skinny build, causes him to look like he requires filling out. His eyes are a piercing shade of blue, accented even more by his usually pale skin. Ryan almost always goes clean shaven and his head is adjourned by a mop of curly hair. Naturally dark brown Ryan bleaches it blond once a month and uses large quantities of hair products to control it.
Ryan’s body is naturally skinny, to the point that it’s a bit scrawny. To prevent himself from looking like he’s nothing more than just skin and bones Ryan works out often, maintaining a toned body and six-pack abs. While he believes that he looks good in just about anything, he is usually found wearing darker, comfortable clothes. He has an extensive collection of t-shirts and wife beaters and his definition of dressing up usually consists of putting on a dress shirt, usually unbuttoned, and a pair of nice jeans.

Personality
Because of his dark sense of humour and sarcastic nature, people tend to view Ryan as a somewhat heartless man, completely void of sympathy. Ryan is rather opinionated and has no problems with sharing his thoughts on just about any subject, even if doing so is likely to get him into trouble. He tries his best to see the world as it is, even if that can be rather depressing at times, and described things as he sees it. One of his biggest pet peeves is when people sugar coat life and live behind rose tinted glasses; as a result Ryan tried to always be straight forward, even when dealing with his children.
While Ryan can be a very serious person, he enjoys joking around a bit, especially when it comes to his job. While he is empathetic, and at times sympathetic, with his callers, when off the air Ryan tries to joke about various calls. To some it’s rude and inappropriate but to him his dark humour is simply a defence he uses to prevent himself from burning out. Ryan takes his job seriously but realizes that if he isn’t careful, dealing with people in the situations that he deals with them in will eventually seriously affect him.
When he isn’t working, Ryan tries to completely put behind him the drama that can be his job. The most important part of his life is his family; as far as Ryan is concerned the best days are spent doing nothing but spending time with his wife and daughters. Even though his family lives almost entirely in Vancouver Ryan still maintains close contact with most of them and is close with his in-laws.
Personal History
His Timeline
One cold December afternoon sixteen-year-old Chelsey Gaiman gave birth to a baby boy. Chelsey was at the start of what would be a lengthy downward spiral; already addicted to drugs she had begun prostituting herself shortly before the conception of her son. As a result, she made the decision to put the baby, who was underweight and slightly premature but otherwise healthy, up for adoption.
The baby was adopted at birth by Terry and Minnie King, a couple who had been married for five years and had failed to conceive. Naming their new son Ryan the two made the decision to not tell him about the circumstances of his birth until he was older, feeling that the truth would be too much for the boy to handle growing up.
Two years later the small family grew with the birth of the Kings biological son, Shawn. Despite the slight age difference and some sibling rivalry (during which Ryan claimed that their mom always favoured Shawn, while Shawn claimed that their dad always favoured Ryan) the two were very close growing up and over time became best friends.
Ryan didn’t learn of his adoption until early on in 1984. He’d been assigned a project for school on himself and while rummaging through a stack of old baby photos he came across his adoption papers. Instantly perplexed, he went to his parents who told him, albeit reluctantly, about his adoption. This confused the thirteen-year-old boy even further. Suddenly knowing that he was adopted and that his real parents had chosen to give him up, Ryan worried about who that made him. His confidence in himself, already rather fragile just as the result of his age, was completely shot, causing what would become a lengthy search for a way to define who he is. After some hesitation in August of the same year Ryan was attempted to contact his birth mother, hoping that maybe she could answer some of his questions. The attempt was for naught, though, and Chelsey didn’t respond to her son’s attempts at contacting her until nearly a year later.
The years of drug addiction and prostitution had taken their toll on Chelsey. She had been heavily addicted to drugs for over half of her life, although at the time of the meeting she had been sober for three months. The meeting shook Ryan; he hadn’t expected his mother to be living the lifestyle that she had. For every question that meeting her had answered dozen more popped up. While before he had wondered who he was because of his adoption, following meeting Chelsey, Ryan worried that he might be destined for the same life.
In an attempt to deal with this, or rather to avoid dealing with it, Ryan began attending more and more parties. His grades dropped drastically and he began experimenting with drugs and alcohol, although never divulging into anything too hard. As if to add to his confusion, in January of 1987 Ryan met and was shunned by Keiron Meltzer, the man who Chelsey believed was Ryan’s father. The man was considerably older than Chelsey and had been married for nearly thirty years and denied having had any part in Ryan’s conception.
Ryan’s downwards progression was cut short in his grade twelve year. At a parent-teacher conference part way through the school year it was revealed that Ryan’s chances of graduating on time were slim. The conference resulted in a huge fight between Ryan and his dad; afterwards the two refused to talk for the better part of a month. However, despite the fact that he claimed to not care about his education, afterwards Ryan did make more of an effort towards school. By the end of the year he had managed to pull things together, graduating with a C- average. To celebrate he and two friends, Peter Lawson and Kurt Snyder, decided to go on a coast-to-coast road trip over the summer. After spending the better part of a month driving across Canada the trio was faced with plotting the return trip home. Not wanting to backtrack or go through Northern Canada the boys decided to return to Vancouver via the States. On August 3 they pulled into Pleasant Port where the car that had driven them across the continent promptly died.
They took the car to the local auto repair shop, where Ryan met Victoria Law, who was working as a secretary there over the summer, for the first time. Two weeks later, when Peter and Kurt decided to just fly back to Vancouver rather than continue waiting for the car to be fixed, Ryan chose to stay behind. He and Victoria began dating, although both knew that it wouldn’t last long. Sure enough, come September Victoria had returned to school and Ryan returned to Vancouver. The two agreed to remain in contact.
When he was nineteen Ryan finally worked up the nerve to take a paternity test, proving once and for all that Keiron was responsible for his conception. While it would still take the man awhile to accept Ryan as his son, Keiron’s wife, Diana, and elder son, Neil, were both much more willing to accept him into their lives.
Later in 1990, with the encouragement of his family, Ryan began Kwantlen University College’s Public Safety Communications program, where he trained to work as a call taker and dispatcher for various emergency services. Through the practical work experience that the program offered he managed to secure a job working with the Vancouver Police Department by the time he completed the program. Ryan enjoyed the job for awhile; however following a riot after a hockey game in 1994 he felt himself becoming jaded and unsatisfied with the life that he was living.
Taking his two week’s vacation, Ryan returned to Pleasant Port where he resumes the relationship that he had had with Victoria five years previously. Rather than ending things once again when Ryan’s vacation ended the two decided to maintain a long distance relationship and he returned to Vancouver with the sole purpose of making the arrangements necessary to move to Pleasant Port permanently. While he loved his hometown the calmer nature of the small town appealed to him. By April of the next year he had moved and began working as a call taker and dispatcher for Pleasant Port’s emergency services.
In August of that year, on the anniversary of the day he first met her, Ryan proposed to Victoria. They were married in June the following year, and had two daughters, Alexis and Caitlin.

Facts
| Ryan has a massive movie collection and is extremely OCD about the arrangement and organization of them. They're all organized by genre, series, release date, then alphabetically, and he keeps a list of them all on his computer. |
 |
| Even though he knows he'll probably never move back to Vancouver, Ryan refuses to outright admit that he'll live in the USA for the rest of his life. He still has his Canadian citizenship and is adamant about not getting an American one. |
 |
| Ryan gets Molson Canadian beer imported just so he doesn't have to drink the American equivalent. |
 |
| Ryan knows all the lyrics to Stompin Tom Connors' "The Hockey Song" and has the chorus as the ring tone for his cell phone. |
 |
| Not being an American citizen, Ryan has never voted in an American election. When he lived in Canada though he always voted NDP. |
 |
| Ryan knows it's weird, but he absolutely loves everything about smoking. To him a cigarette is more than just the feeling he gets; he loves the taste, the smell, even the texture of the smoke. |
 |
| Ryan's always wanted to have a son. It's not that he thinks he would love a son more than he loves his daughters, but because he really wants to play with the different toys that are aimed for boys. With two daughters, both who are rather girly, he has no reason to justify buying remote control cars, Lego, or action figures. As a result of this, he spoils his nephews, especially Rodney, a lot. |
 |
| Even though the girls aren't particularly interested in Lego, Ryan absolutely loves them and will buy at least one set for every birthday and Christmas, which he usually ends up playing with. He currently has a sizeable collection, including all of the Star Wars sets. |
 |
| Ryan is a huge closet anime fan. His favourite is Death Note, which he regularly tries to get his wife into. |
 |
| Ryan has a dark sense of humour. With some friends, Martin especially, he can spend hours sitting around exchanging the worst jokes that he can think of. His favourite are dead baby jokes, although he's refrained from them since his wife got pregnant again. |

Family
| Victoria King |
Ryan and his wife have an increasingly complicated relationship. Ryan has been in love with her since he was a teenager, although he didn't really realize it until he was in his mid-twenties. Now, he absolutely adores her, and there is very little that he wouldn't do for her. Their relationship become strained, however, since he suffered his penile fracture. For several months afterwards Ryan shrinked away from being physically intimate. The two have slowly been working on rekindling their romance since the end of May.
|
| Alexis King |
Ryan's eldest daughter. |
| Caitlin King |
Ryan's youngest daughter. |
| King Feotus |
Ryan's third child is as of yet unborn. While he and Victoria already have two children, this third pregnancy has worried him more. He is very aware of the fact that Vicky isn't as young as she once was and worries that her increasing age will result in problems with the baby. He is looking forward to having another child though; he really hopes that this one is a boy, although he hasn't dared to say as much to his wife. The baby is due September 7.
|
| Chelsey Gaiman |
Ryan only knew his biological mother briefly. He didn't meet her until he was in his 20s and even after that her ongoing drug addiction kept them apart. Ryan was by her side when she died and his biggest fear is that her addictions could be passed down to him or his children. |
| Anne Cromwell |
Ryan's biological half-sister is nearly ten years younger than him and is severely handicapped as the result of their mother's ongoing drug addiction. Because of her handicap, her adopted parents have decided that it's best if Ryan doesn't explain to her who he is, although he makes sure to visit Anne every time he's in Vancouver. |
| Robinson Minstry |
Ryan has only known his youngest half brother for a couple years. The two keep regular contact and meet up whenever Ryan is in Vancouver. |
| Keiron Metlzer |
Ryan has a very strained relationship with his biological father. While Keiron has been forced to admit that Ryan is his son, the two don't get along or maintain regular contact. Ryan visits his father when he is in Vancouver, but other than that has little to do with the man. |
| Diana Meltzer |
Despite his strained relationship with his biological father, Ryan has a very good relationship with his step-mother. The two regularly exchange emails and Ryan goes out for lunch with her at least once every time he's in Vancouver. |
| Neil Meltzer |
Neil is Ryan's only older sibling. The two are good friends despite their age difference, although their relationship is based on the condition that neither mentions their father. |
| Terry King |
Despite growing apart a bit when Ryan first learned of his adoption, since coming to terms with it Ryan is very close with his adopted father. The two talk daily and Ryan often goes to his dad for advice. |
| Minnie King |
Ryan isn't as close with his adopted mother as he is with his dad, but the two are still rather close. They talk daily, and Ryan has been known to go to her for advice, although not as often as he goes to his dad. |
| Shawn King |
In addition to being his brother Shawn is Ryan's best friend. Rarely does a day go by when they don't talk at least once, if not more. |
| Judy Law |
Feeling completely accepted by his in-law's, Ryan gets along with Victoria's mother as well as he does with his own mom. The two talk regularly, and he has been known to go to her for advice whenever he makes mistakes with Victoria. |
| Bernard Law |
Ryan gets along with Victoria's father to a degree. The two are friendly, but Ryan always feels like he has to prove himself to the man and as if a part of his father-in-law believes that he isn't good enough for Victoria. |
| Martin Law |
Ryan considers his brother-in-law to be a good friend. Martin is probably Ryan's best friend in Pleasant Port. |
| Patricia Law |
Ryan doesn't really get along with his sister-in-law although he doesn't actually admit to it. |
| Rodney Law |
Ryan's nephew. |
Pets
 |
Lady has lived with the Kings since 2003. Ryan insisted on buying her and hasn't regretted it since. |
 |
Toby has lived with the Kings since 2007. While the dog is rather mischievous, Ryan absolutely adores him, even if he does have a habit of getting into the shoes. |

| Character |
Relationship |
| Andrew Baker |
Ryan knows Andrew through his work. As the call taker/dispatcher, it is his responsibility to call Andrew whenever there's a fatality on a scene. Because of this, he doesn't really like having to talk to the man. |
| Kaitlin Collins |
Ryan knows Kaitlin primarily through work, although they're also both members of the Climbing Club. He sees her around the office a lot, although he's never really talked to her. |
| Thaddeus Cutter |
Thad is the only one of the detectives in the station that Ryan actually likes. The man is rather down to earth, and as a result he's always liked meeting up with him on smoke breaks, or on the rare occassion at the dog park, and talking with him. He particularly likes making fun of the other cops, although they haven't done as much since Henry Rodriguez left. |

| Domitrae Francis |
Ryan considers Dom to be his bad influence friend. Whenever Ryan is thinking about doing something stupid, particularly when it comes to his marriage, Dom is the friend who usually encourages him. |
| August Henry |
Gus and Ryan have an interesting friendship; to anyone watching them it would seem like the two probably didn't like each other. Constantly goofing around they belittle each other a great deal. The biggest long running joke between the two is Ryan's hair; Gus makes fun of him for going to a salon, while Ryan claims that he doesn't trust Gus' skill as a barber enough to let him touch his hair. |
