Brief History

The Pleasant Port Public Library, originally known as the “The Free Reading Room,” opened July 6, 1907 in a small house located in Main Street, where remained during 91 years. When the batch of books at the library grew, another bigger building was needed, so the library was moved to it's actual location on Farmer's Avenue on May 12th 1998.

The library and the town are preparing to meet the demands of a growing population while preserving the small town rural and historic character that is Pleasant Port. If the past is any indication of the future, the Pleasant Port Public Library will continue to evolve and change to meet the needs of its residents.

Eleanor Salinger was a librarian here from 1976 to 2006.
