To put it simply, Michael is a goof. He's the friend that, when you were in high school, you thought was the coolest guy and aspired to be like. However, as everyone around him got older and grew up, Michael refused to change, insisting on remaining, for the most part, the jock that was cool in high school.

A great guy to party with, Mike is loud and loves being the center of people's attention. He can be a womanizer, although since taking up with Ricky he has appeared to become somewhat settled. His antics are often juvenile and tend to get him into trouble more often than not. When in a situation where others would use diplomacy or run, Mike often continues to provoke the situation, doing all he can to make it worse, just for kicks.

Michael Fitzgerald grew up in Pleasant Port. As a youth, his family was friends with the Brinkeroffs and Sullivans, resulting in a close friendship between himself and their boys, Adrian and JJ. The three were nearly inseperable as teens, all taking similar classes, all on the rugby team. Many would say that Ade was the sensitive goof of the bunch, JJ the smart one, and Mike the immature womanizer.

When high school ended it seemed like the trio would be split up, so, for one last huge party before it happened, the three went to Ireland, where they had what could only later be described as a drunken pub crawl. Part way through the trip, the trio slipped up, walking into a Catholic pub wearing orange. The act had caused a commotion, one which Mike had been quick to encourage. The three would have been on the receiving end of a nasty fight had Alex not popped in. He had pulled the three out and, after dubbing them the Orangemen, made their trio into a foursome.

In the years that were to follow, Mike kept up his friendship with the others only by chance. He went to the same college as Ade and kept his job at the department store run by Maureen and Bernard Brinkeroff. Never having been one for school, it wasn't long until he dropped out of college, although he did do everything he could to be the best clerk in the sports section.

In the end, after Alex had moved beside the Sullivans but before JJ had returned from college, it was revealed that Mike had been having a long term affair with Alex's wife, Ricky. Mike's relationship with his long time friends faltered and, as soon as Ricky's divorce came through, the two left the town for New Mexico.

Since leaving Pleasant Port, Ricky and Mike have developed a common-law marriage. Ricky has custody off her son, Connor Stone and the two have their own daughter, Briana.

Mike lives in New Mexico with Ricky Fayzed and her family, including her son Connor and their daughter Briana.

	Connor is Mike’s step-son. He lives with Mike and his mother, although he visits his father on occasion. Connor calls Mike ‘Uncle Daddy’, swears, and insists on telling his teachers inappropriate things about his mother and step-father, all of which he’s learnt from his dad.
	Brianna is Mike’s daughter. More like her mother than her father, Brianna is already showing signs of being a difficult child. Eager to learn, she quickly picks up on the various things that her brother teachers her.
	Alex used to be one of Mike’s best friends. The two met when Mike went to Ireland, where Alex saved his life. In exchange, Mike struck up an affair with Alex’s then-wife. When the affair became public, Mike and Ricky moved to New Mexico. Alex hasn’t said a word to Mike since, even though Mike has tried to repair the friendship.

	Jackie is Mike's former friend and Ricky's ex's current girlfriend. Mike doesn't really care about Jackie but is happy that Alex is in a relationship; he figures that as long as Alex is preoccupied elsewhere he isn't likely to turn to Ricky.

	Geri and Mike never really got along, although they never openly disliked each other. They haven't spoken since Mike's relationship with Ricky became common knowledge.
	Growing up JJ was like a brother to Mike. Mike always thought that they'd be friends forever, but his relationship with the other man has been strained because of Ricky's divorce.
