Malachai was raised in his grandfather's trailer until he was ready for school. Then his mother got a job in Austin and settled down to let him stay in one school. He'd go to the shop with her sometimes after school while she finished her hours. In '94, she married his stepfather, Claude Dempsey. At first Claude was pretty good to him, got him into a fancy private school and moved his mom and him out of the one bedroom apartment and into an enormous house. Then... things got bad, little by little. Finally things came to a head when his mother caught Claude hitting him. He told her it was the first time it had happened. It wasn't. It didn't matter. She yanked him and his brother and their unborn sister out of Claude's clutches.
In 2001, they moved to Pleasant Port.

Scott Archer: Mal met Scott when he moved to town in 11th grade. They became pretty good friends in high school and remain good friends to this day.
Fletcher Montgomery: Malachai met Fletcher on the top of a cliff when he was 17. They dove off of it together, wild, and that was the beginning of their friendship. For almost a year, they would often go on day hikes and climbs together. Then Mal left for college.
