History

John James “JJ” Sullivan was born to Edward and Kay Sullivan at Pleasant Port Hospital in 1974. Both Edward and Kay were prominent local surgeons and considered pillars of the community. Edward was Chief of Surgery at Pleasant Port Hospital and Kat ran a successful Plastic Surgery practice that serviced the entire state. She specialized in Facial Reconstruction. Though obviously not English, the Sullivan’s were one of the founding families of Pleasant Port and there has been a “Dr. Sullivan” since the towns beginning.

Growing up JJ did well in most subjects at school. Math and science were his best and history and English were his worst. He was pushed to work hard by his parents who envisioned him as a surgeon himself one day. JJ did indeed see himself as a doctor and as a surgeon one day; just not for human beings. JJ loved animals and wanted to become a Veterinarian. Of course his parents would have none of this and JJ, wanting to please his parents and understanding that he was guaranteed a good living as a doctor, entered Syracuse University as a pre med student in 1992 when he was eighteen years old.

Along with doing well in his classes, JJ was also a star rugby player for the schools team. Due to his size and strength JJ was a perfect choice for the teams Tighthead prop. Despite his skill, most schools in America do not pay attention to rugby and there were no scholarships to be had. Luckily, with surgeons as parents, money was never an issue for JJ. Despite the fact that the Sullivans fit into what would be considered "wealthy" they lived in a middle class area of town and had mostly teachers and other's along the same line as friends.

JJ was not a “Ladies Man” in school but he did a few girlfriends. When JJ in the 12th grade he dated a very nice girl named Charlotte. They lasted six months before JJ had to move out of state and at their age a long distance relationship would have been overly hard to manage.

He worked at Brinkeroff's Deptartment Store (owned by his aunt and uncle) as a young man. JJ was normally in the Sports/Campting dept. but was on occasion moved to other areas such as Mens or (once) jewelry. There he met Brady Hernandez. He and Brady became friends. Though JJ knows Brady is gay, he has no idea about his friends actual feelings.

JJ did well in his studies. He soon found that being a doctor for human being’s was not as terrible as he thought it would be, though his heart still remained in Veterinarian Medicine. After pre med JJ stayed on at Syracuse University and entered the Medical School there. His parents wanted him to become a surgeon like themselves and in a small act of rebellion; JJ picked Emergency Medicine as his specialty.

JJ was a twenty five year old intern when he met a nineteen year old Special Education student named Geri O’Leary from Boston. She was the cousin of one of his buddy’s girlfriends and was living with her aunt while she attended Syracuse University. He fell for her (literally fell off the porch) immediately and asked her out. She said no.

Eventually, by being persistent he got the little girl from Boston to say yes and have been together about seven years and married two years ago. JJ proposed to her on Christmas Eve 2002. JJ’s groomsmen consisted of his cousin Adrian Brinkeroff as his Best Man and Travis Collins, Bryce Cabbot, Alexander Stone, and Adam Sanders. Before they married they moved to Pleasant Port so JJ could finish his Residency and Geri could take a job as the High School Section Special Ed. teacher.

Currently JJ is the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Pleasant Port Hospital. At only thirty two years old and really just out of his training, this is almost totally unheard of. Sadly, the reason behind JJ becoming the Chief of the ER was that the previous Chief had run the department so far into the ground no one else wanted to deal with it. In the simplest of terms; JJ was drafted. As of right now, JJ has been Chief of Emergency Medicine for about four months now. He is just doing his best to keep the ER from sinking. He understands that in the end, it’s all about money and that money is what makes the world…and Pleasant Port Hospital go round and round.

Facts

• JJ is right handed but opens doors with his left.

Personality

At first glance, JJ is a grumpy bugger. His size and tired appearance lend to this and does his to the point and strict manner at the ER. JJ is seldom seen smiling at the ER and can normally be found yelling down the phone or correcting an intern in a less than “fatherly” manner.

At home and around his friends JJ is totally different. He is still grouchy, but in a more loveable way. JJ has a very close group of friends and he likes to spend time with them. He and Geri like to host BBQ’s as JJ considers himself a “god of the grill.”

JJ is very easy going when he is around his friends. He has a slightly dry sense of humor that can come across as being a little bit nasty at times and he is not above making fun of people who make stupid comments. With his friends JJ likes to just laugh and have a good time. He likes to go to the local (non dive) bar, go see a movie, or go and play some rugby in the park.

At work though, JJ is very quiet, driven, and to the point. He understands what needs to be done and will do almost anything do get it done. He is not above bending the rules when he feels a patient deserves more care than they are being given and is also not above giving just the bare minimum to a patient who seems ungrateful. JJ takes his Hippocratic Oath very seriously and expects other to do the same.

Due to JJ being overweight he is slightly self conscious and that can make him very snappish and unpleasant at times. He also holds grudges for a long time and can be very jealous and judgmental.

He would get up at two in the morning after working a twenty four hour shift to pull a friend out of the mud and grouch at them the entire drive home.

JJ is like most people; a genuinely kind and good person with some less wonderful traits.

Adrian Brinkeroff - JJ's cousin, the two were raised more as brothers. They are still very close. More will be added.

Travis Collins - JJ babysat Travis when he was younger and the two have stayed very close. Despite the ten year age gap the two are best friends and JJ looks at Travis as half his little brother and half his son. JJ liked to take Travis with him when he played Rugby and when he went to the mall. Travis was also one of JJ's groomsmen when he married Geri two years ago.

Alexander Stone - Truth be told, Alex saved JJ's life. JJ, his cousin Adrian, and their friend Mike were visiting Ireland just before they all went off to different schools. They made the mistake of wearing "Protestant" colors into a Catholic bar and found themselves in a massive fist fight. Alex, who worked at the pub pulled JJ, Adrian, and Mike from the fight and the group became fsat friends; keeping in touch through emails and phone calls. Alex was one of JJ's groomsmen and JJ is proud to be an "Uncle" to Connor.

Adam Sanders - JJ and Adam played on the schools Rugby team together and were good friends all through school. When Adam left they kept in touch but did drift apart a little. When he came back they rebuilt their friendship and Adam was one of JJ's groomsmen at his 2004 wedding. JJ is also one of the only people who know's that Adam is gay.

Brady Hernandez- JJ and Brady sometimes worked together at Brinkeroff's when they were teens. JJ was normally in the Sporting/Camping section but was sometimes moved to other departments whe staff was short. JJ really liked Brady - thinking the older boy was very nice and very cool. JJ is very happy that Brady has moved back to Pleasant Port though is totally ignorant of Brady's feelings for him.

Cameron Tritton - JJ was one grade ahead of Cameron in school and was one of the only people who endured Cams pranks. With Cam just moving back to Pleasant Port the two men, now in their thirties, are reconnecting.

Bryce Cabbot - JJ and Bryce are good friends. JJ and Bryce played on the Rugby team in high school. JJ was older and therefore one of the people responsible for teaching the younger players the ins and outs of the game. The two stayed close and Bryce was a groomsman at JJ's wedding.

Friends

Brian Miller - JJ knows Brian mostly as the step brother of his ex girlfriends husband. He has only talked with him a few times and thinks he seems nice.

Christopher Miller - JJ likes Chris a lot. They are the same age and have a few of the same interests. He and Geri like to do things with Chris and Charlotte.

Charlotte Miller - Charlotte is JJ's ex girlfriend from High School. They dated for six months and broke up on good terms when JJ was leaving for Pre-Med. A long distance relationship would have been to hard at their young ages. Now, JJ and Charlotte are both in happy marriages with other people but still like to do things together once in a while.

Nicolette Collins - JJ thinks Mrs. Collins is a really nice lady and enjoyed babysitting for her. She was always very nice to him when he was younger and even came to his Medical School graduation.

Elizabeth Hall - JJ has nothing but total respect for Dr. Hall. He often turns to her when he needs advice about running the ER or about dealing with difficult residents coughAllisoncough. They share a strong friendship and Dr. Hall is always, in a sweet way, giving JJ a hard time about his weight and health. It comes from a good place.

Maggie Felix - JJ and Maggie's parents are good friends. JJ would watch Maggie and her brother Clive every once in a while. He still talks to her now and then and thinks she's a very nice young lady.

Clive Felix - JJ and Clive's parents are good friends and Clive was one of Geri's students. He thinks Clive is just funny as all hell.

Ben Sutton - JJ and Ben grew up together. JJ would often watch Ben what their parents went out together. JJ thinks very highly of him and regards him as a casual friend.

Adela Martinez - Adela and JJ are the same age and went through school together. They are old friends who still see each other from time to time. When Adela lost her parents they drifted apart because she moved away and that was just when JJ was attending pre-med and Medical School. They are getting to know each other again now, in their thirties.

Camille McGhee - JJ met Camille when he treated her for a bee sting a few years ago. He was upset at the fact that her husband had simply left her at the ER and he sat with her for a few hours. She also did the flowers for JJ and Geri's wedding.

Acquaintances

Theo Beckett - JJ and Theo have met mostly under rather terrible circumstances. These situations normally involve animal attacks and stitches or head wounds. JJ does not believe all the rumors about Theo and thinks people should just give the guy a chance.

Larissa Tritton - JJ mostly knows her as his friend Camerons younger sister. He never really liked her and only talked to her when it came to keeping Cam from doing something VERY stupid. A recent incident at Brinkeroffs has cemented, in JJ's mind at least, his intense dislike of the woman.

Riley Collins - JJ babysat Riley when she was younger and she was a lot of work. Today they are friendly but JJ knows that Riley thinks he is a "dork" and they really just say "hi" to each other.

Nick Collins - JJ babysat Nick when he was younger. JJ does not really like or dislike him.

Liam McBride- Father McBride married JJ and Geri at the little beach by the Lighthouse two years ago. JJ also knows him from his visits to the Pleasant Port Hospital. JJ likes him well enough although he finds him a bit conservative and old fashion.

Robert Gray - JJ and Robert were in the same grade in school and were friendly. They remain friendly today.

Work

Allison Hodge - JJ is Allison's superior at the ER. He respects her for her abilities as a Pediatrician but thinks she does not understand her actions come back on the Pleasant Port Hospital and on him. Often he is the one holding back (physically a few times)when she wants to do some things that would get the Hospital in trouble.

Meredith Jenkins - JJ think Meredith is a very nice young lady and moreover, she is a damn good nurse. JJ has a lot of respect for her.

Enemies

Gabriel Parker - Mr. Parker tried to buy land from JJ's mother and father several years ago. They refused and it passed to JJ when they moved to Arizona. JJ sold Parker the land to get money for the ER.

The man is a powerhouse at the hospital, and I don't think he realizes how many people look up to him and are just blown away by what he's done and is doing for the ER. Personally I have nothing but the highest respect for him, and consider it a blessing to be able to count him as a friend."

Allison Hodge: "JJ, good ol' JJ... Of course I do know that he's right and I also know he had my back loads of time but sometimes he's annoying when he thinks he has to hold me back at work. He's a great doctor and person though and fun to tease now and then. And honestly? I think I should count myself lucky I got him as my superior."

Scott Archer: "I met him when he dated my sister in high school. I can't believe that cool jock became such a fat geek."

Robert Gray: "I've known JJ since forever ago, and even though we're not the best of friends, I'm familiar enough with him to know that he's a great guy."

Brady Hernandez: "I've known JJ since before the dawn of time, and he's one hell of a nice guy. He's a sweetheart with a big heart. Has a sweet tooth the size of Texas though. Don't tell his wife, but I usually give him a free brwonie when he comes by the bakery."
