At first glance you would think that Jesse was most likely homeless. Spending a lot of time in third world countries has allowed him the perspective of not really caring if he's dressed nicely. Usually seen in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt or sweatshirt no matter the weather. His hair is kept shaggy, not because it's his style, but because he is far too lazy to cut it. Always appearing as if he's fallen out of bed, he has a particular feel about him, making him easily approachable.
History
Jesse Thompson grew up in the small town of Pleasant Port, in a nice suburban house next to the Martinez's. His favorite person to tease growing up was the girl next door, Adela, three years his junior. Jesse decided at a young age that he was meant to travel. When he was twelve years old he took a bike trip 16 miles into the next town, forgetting to tell his mother. A born adventurer Jesse didn't think twice about going off to college in Washington at UW, always coming home for every break to see his family and friends in Pleasant Port. As he decided to major in cultural studies, his plan was always to join the Peace Corps.
In highschool he went on a summer long road trip from coast to coast in the United States with his good friend Tim. It brought them closer together, both of them gaining an understanding and a great deal of self awareness. After that Tim and Jesse seemed to be pretty inseperable, always seen running around causing trouble in the small town of Pleasant Port. Jesse owes a great deal of his adventures and misadventures to Tim.
His first summer out of highschool he backpacked through Europe with his father as a graduation present. He was intrigued by the culture and art and knew he could never get enough traveling. He wanted to visit every country he could before he died and made it his goal. He father was incredible supportive, funding many of the trips that he desired.
When he returned from his first year of college he noticed that Adela had grown up, grown up to the point that she was attractive. While he hung out with her a lot that summer he never acted on it. The next summer he found himself spending even more time with Adela, usually accompanied by Tim. However it wasn't until the next summer that she turned eighteen that he really made his move. With what seemed like a great summer, that he spent with Adela he realized that the long distance thing never worked. While they kept in touch through the year they were never really considered a couple. When he got back the summer after his senior year of college he was in no hurry to settle down into a relationship. He ended up getting drunk and sleeping with Sam Woodstoves. When Adela found out she was upset and things were strained. He wasn't sure how to appologize, and felt justified in the fact that they were not together at the time. He found out that she had slept with Luke, unable to understand, and unwilling to think that his actions had anything to do with it he closed off and kept his distance.
When Adela's parents died, Jesse had been home. After hearing the gunshots he called 911, the second person to reach them. After knowing Adela and caring for her so much, there was no way he could not be there for her after her parent's awful death. Flying down with Tim and Adela, he waited until they were settled before heading out to Somalia for his two years in the Peace Corps. While going home was thrilling he'd learned so much he wasn't ready to quit his volunteer work. After a few weeks in Mexico with Tim and Adela and 2 short months in Pleasant Port he found his heart aching to leave again.
It was then that Tim left Mexico, leaving Adela there for the first time alone since her parents death. Once he'd talked to her he knew that he needed to spend a little time in Mexico, keeping her company. When he got there they found themselves pulled into something more than either one of them had expected. He didn't want to leave and for the next three months they unspokenly were together. Once it had been three months Jesse was unable to kick the idea of traveling in other countries, helping others and living that life. Adela told him to go, that she understood and he went.
Finding himself next in Cambodia he loved teaching people how to read and write and bringing deprived villages food. He learned a lot about himself and after three years, he felt a sudden urge to go back to Africa. Within two months he was in Ethiopia where he met Lila. Lila was an Aussie working as a medic around Africa, visiting villages and offering health care. Within day's he'd agreed to wander through Africa, spending several months in each village before moving out and on to another one.
It was six months from the time they met that they decided to get married. In a small quaint village they partook in a commitment ceremony, headed by a village elder. It seemed like a whirlwind romance. Jesse couldn't get enough of Lila and respected her greatly. A year later when their son was born, they decided to name him after the elder. Tuma completely changed Jesse's life. He found himself spending as much time with him as he could, often following headstrong Lila around, growing tired of the constant changes, and the difficulties of raising a child in that environment.
Last year, when Jesse's father died, he made the decision to stay in the next village they arrived at, long enough to finish things up and work toward a plane ticket to get home. He was tired of raising Tuma in various villages and constantly moving. He was now five. Lila agreed that moving back to Pleasant Port was a good idea. With an awkward goodbye, Jesse had made his decision. After another six months he finally has made it back to Pleasant Port.
He returned home and almost immediately began dating Adela again. Things were going fine for the most part until Lila made unexpected visit. She decided to stay for a while, which made Jesse happy for Tuma, but he knew that he could never go back to dating her. His life has been hectic since then, with a sudden breakup from Adela and Lila's sudden departure. Since then Jesse has tried to occupy most of the time for him and Tuma. He's been hanging out with Cadissy from time to time with the kids.
Personality
Jesse is probably one of the most social people around. He can walk into a setting he's completely unfamiliar with and find a way to fit in, regardless of his background or knowledge. He's considers himself worldly in most things. Having spent a great deal of his adult life traveling and doing volunteer work he has a great deal of knowledge about other cultures. He can almost constantly be found with a book when he's not out and about. He likes to stay busy.
While Jesse is incredibly intelligent and outgoing, the one area he lacks real smarts in is women. He's always been the kind of guy to goof off and not realize a good thing when he has it. His mind is generally elsewhere and with traveling so much he's really only connected with one woman enough to declare a serious relationship, his wife. He's definitely into being the funny one, constantly cracking jokes and generally loving to be around his friends. The few people he was close to growing up, happen to the be the people he's sent post cards to on a monthly basis since he left when he was 22. Now at 35, he finds himself far behind the rest of his friends who are established and settling down. He still has yet to hold a job for very long, other than Volunteer work.
As far as family goes his life really does revolve around his son Tuma. Tuma goes nearly everywhere with him and he's yet to find a time when he doesn't want to be around him. His decision to move back to Pleasant Port was based strongly on Tuma's desire to have a normal childhood and go to a real school. His greatest weakness his son's happiness.

Relationship with other characters
Jesse has known Tim for quite a while. In highschool they both got their first taste of traveling after going on a coast to coast road trip one summer. Jesse considers Tim one of his closest friends, although they haven't really lived in the same place for quite some time. They remain buddies and see each other often. Jesse considers Tim a brother.
His girlfriend on an off through college and after. The two of them have had their fair share of ups and downs. Adela is now Jesse's girlfriend. Once he got back to Pleasant Port he couldn't kick the idea of wanting to be with her and remained persistant until she agreed. He's crazy about her and intent on not screwing up their relationship again.
One of his favorite people to hang out with growing up. Never more than a platonic relationship, he started climbing with Emily when they were in highschool, having kept in touch here and there throughout his travels, Jesse is excited that he can see her more often now that he's back in Pleasant Port.
Robert is Emily's brother. As long as he's known Emily, he's know Robert who's always been the kid brother tagging along whenever him and Emily hung out.
Still knows Jason as Emily's fiance. He's met him before and considers him a nice guy.
Went to highschool together. Has run into him several times during the last week at the bakery. Hopes to get their son's together at some point when Brady has custody.
Can't stand the guy. First of all, all he heard in highschool was about how great Luke was from Emily, and the fact that he wouldn't look twice at her. Then in college Luke slept Adela, which drives him absolutely crazy. Of course, Jesse can't stand him and probably wouldn't be too nice to him if they were to bump into each other.
Knows Mark from the next farm over. He thinks pretty highly of him so far, and has a great deal of respect for him. Jesse depends on Mark a lot for helping him with questions he has about the land. Jesse has also found that they have a lot of similar interests.
Knows her through her father. Think's she's a nice kid, and has made plans for her to babysit Tuma.
Someone he slept with the summer he was twenty two. It was casual, no strings attached. They haven't seen each other since.
