Jeffrey is a man who has aged with dignity. Taking care with his image he delicately balances appearing professional and distinguished without ever once crossing the line into homo – or even metro – sexual. Jeffrey’s chiselled face has been worn by the years. His eyes, which have always had a piercing and old look to them, have only become more distinguished as they developed crow’s feet. As the result of a frequent furrowing of his brows there is a semi-permanent crease in between his eyebrows. And despite the fact that he is rarely seen smiling, Jeffrey sports noticeable smile lines. Jeffrey’s lips are thin while his nose is larger and, in his opinion, rather beak-like.

Looking at Jeffrey it is clear to see that when he was younger he was most likely a bit scrawny. While he has gained weight as he’s aged, rather than causing him to look fat it’s simply filled him out. He does have love handles, but they’re not really noticeable unless he goes shirtless, an occurrence that rarely happens outside of his bedroom. In keeping with his attempt to maintain his dignity, Jeffrey regularly wears what he deems to be professional, formal, or semi-formal clothing. Preferring darker clothing, Jeffery only has a few light coloured shirts – asides from the white ones that he wears with suits – and usually reserves them for the summer months. Jeffrey abhors loud colours, thinking that neon and tye-dye are the result of far too many drugs. Similarly, Jeffrey hates clothing that he believes personifies laziness and trash, primarily anything that can be referred to using words like ‘tank’ or ‘beater’.

Personality

Jeffrey is conservative to an extreme. Raised in an abusive home, he grew up to believe in what he thought to be the ideal American dream; the functional nuclear family with strong men and obedient women. Jeffrey sees any deviation from this ideal as wrong and often immoral, condemning those who seek alternative lifestyles. Because of his strict values and strong belief in gender roles, he places an extreme importance on the image that he leaves on others. He tries to maintain his composure constantly, rarely showing any extreme emotions. He likes to remain cool and collected and because of his ability to prevent his feelings from breaking through his icy exterior he is often perceived to be heartless and without compassion. This isn’t true; Jeffrey does care about those around him, his wife and children especially, he just doesn’t know how to show it and has a tendency to focus more on what he sees to be their failures than their successes in life.

Jeffrey’s biggest weakness is his inability to properly express himself. He allows his emotions to remain pent up, often even ignoring their existence himself. He fears failing at attempting to allow those he loves to become close to him, and as a results doesn’t bother trying. He worries about the choices that his children have made, but rather than trying to talk with them about it civilly, all he is ever able to show them is his anger and disappointment. In his mind, the biggest failure of his life has been allowing his children to fail in theirs.

Personal History

His Timeline

At the beginning of the American involvement of in the Second World War there was a young couple who were in love. The two were fresh out of high school and he was eager to serve his country while she was eager to be a soldier’s wife. The couple married and the young man, Nicholas Lewis, went off to war. His wife, Vanessa, stayed in Pleasant Port and, less than nine months after Nicholas was sent overseas, gave birth to their first child, Amber. At the end of the war Nicholas returned and the couple continued expanding their family, first with daughter Sara and then, at the end of 1949, their son Jeffrey was born.

Before the boy turned one, the country was at war once more. Having had difficulties finding work as a civilian, Nicholas quickly re-enlisted. When he returned, he was a changed man. The war shook him and the carefree boy who loved his country was replaced by an abusive, angry, neglectful drunk.

This was the home that Jeffrey Lewis grew up into. His mother tried her best to provide a caring and safe home for her children, showering them with affection as best as she could, but his father would have none of it. Nicholas rarely hesitated to verbally attach his wife and daughters but the brunt of his abuse fell on his son. He stressed masculine characteristics and would lash out if it seemed like Jeffrey was being coddled or taught to be feminine. While this left Jeffrey with a strong belief in gender roles, it also left him emotionally crippled. Not wanting to be like his father and unsure of just how to properly express himself, Jeffrey repressed his emotions.

While in school, Jeffrey met Naomi Rosenstone. While Jeffrey had no idea how to express himself, with her, in their relationship it didn’t seem to matter. The two shared similar beliefs in the way the world should be run and just what a real family way. When Jeffrey was 16, he asked Naomi out, and the two were together until her death.

When Jeffery graduated from high school he was quick to get a job, at the Pleasant Port Bank, and move out into an apartment of his own. He began taking courses at the community college, eventually graduating with a degree in accounting. At age twenty-five he married Naomi and they moved into the house on Sunset Creek. While they wanted to have a family, they planned on waiting a bit before doing so. Two years later, their daughter, Adina, was born. As was expected, Naomi was the perfect mother and while he was still awkward, Jeffrey learnt. He dotted on his daughter and showered her with affection, in his own way. At first, after the birth, the couple tried to have more children, hoping for the nuclear family of a boy and a girl, but after a couple years and no success, they stopped. They were happy as they were.

Which is why they were shocked to find Naomi was pregnant at the end of 1981. When Micah was born early the next year, Jeffrey was overjoyed to finally have his son, but terrified at the same time. He was able to connect with Adina, it was like they had their own little world, but he feared turning into someone like his father when it came to the boy. While he tried to make an effort with Micah in the early years, as it became evident that the two didn’t really connect, he gave up. Soon, he became emotionally distant, allowing Naomi to deal with the boy. The only time Jeffrey really paid attention to his son was when he felt that the boy was proving to be an embarrassment or failure or, even worse, when he was failing to be masculine. While he didn’t know how to connect with the boy, he did know that he didn’t want his son to grow up to be anything but a man.

This way of life continued until the mid-nineties. When Adina graduated from high school and began taking courses at the college, Jeffrey was overjoyed. That’s why, when he first began noticing that alcohol was missing from his liquor cabinet, he thought nothing of it. As it continued, and got worse, he began to get concerned. And when Adina told her parents that she was a bisexual, Jeffrey flipped. For the first time, the perfect relationship between father and daughter was on the rocks. And, in the years to come, as Adina refused to conform to her father’s ideals and sought out an alternative lifestyle, the relationship only disintegrated further.

Jeffrey’s relationship with his daughter was only saved by the revelation of his son’s drug addiction. Following Micah’s graduation from high school, Jeffrey had begun to suspect that something was wrong with the boy, but he could never figure it out. When Micah dropped out of college and seemed to be partying until all hours of the night, Jeffrey was angered but didn’t suspect drugs. He blamed the boy’s friends and hoped that it would settle down after a while. He even thought that the boy might come out of the phase better off; maybe a lot of partying would finally turn Micah into a man.

That is, until early April 2003, when Micah overdosed on drugs. He was found at the foot of the stairs by his mother and on receiving the news Jeffrey rushed to the hospital from work. While he did his best to maintain a cool, collected image while in public, Jeffrey was wrought with grief. He blamed himself for not realizing what was going on earlier and for never having tried harder with his son. In the privacy of his home later that night, Jeffrey broke down, crying at the failures of his children and his own as a parent. Jeffrey resolved to not ignore either of his children any further and to be there, to prevent them from continuing down their dark paths.

In the months that followed Micah’s overdose, Jeffrey sincerely tried to change. Micah was sent to rehab and Jeffrey used that time to try to try to try to repair the relationship between him and Adina, to salvage the connection that had once been there. However, old habits die hard and while the tense situation as mended to a degree, neither Lewis could see eye-to-eye on any aspect of life. Jeffrey was unwilling to accept Adina’s lifestyle and Adina enjoyed getting a rise out of her father. Having failed to reconnect with his daughter, Jeffrey didn’t bother to build a new relationship with Micah – they had never had much of one in the first place and Jeffrey doubted that they’d be able to build one at this point in life.

When Micah returned from rehab the situation returned, in many ways, to the way it was before. Following his wife’s lead, Jeffrey for the most part acted as if Micah’s drug problem didn’t exist. He resumed badgering the boy, trying to force him to be a better person, all while ignoring Adina’s own failures as best as possible. As time passed, Jeffery all but forgot the fears he had had when Micah was in the hospital and began to embrace the anger he felt about the situation.

Micah's car accident in February, 2007, changed this. While Jeffrey had been all too willing to believe that his son had transgressed back to his drug addiction, especially after Micah moved out of Adina's apartment, the accident forced him to see the situation as otherwise. Jeffrey hasn't actually made a move to fully accept his son's lifestyle, but the two aren't completely at war anymore. In the first few months after Micah's accident Jeffrey provided monetary support while Naomi eagerly did all she could to take care of her baby. Once things settled with Micah, to the protests of all involved, Naomi installed a weekly family dinner. Now, while Jeffrey still doesn't see eye to eye with either of his children, he's at least capable of being civil with them.

Walking home from the theatre on October 27, 2007 Jeffrey and Naomi were approached by a stranger. The man pulled a gun on the two of them, promising Jeffrey that if he complied Naomi wouldn't be hurt. After taking the money from Jeffrey's wallet the man shot Naomi twice in the head, killing her instantly.  In dealing with this, Jeffrey has chosen instead to throw himself completely into his work, keeping himself busy rather than actually allow himself to focus on his loss.  Shortly after Naomi's funeral his son approached him about buying the Photo Studio.  While Jeffrey hesitated at first when Micah made out a business plan he relented and agreed to fund it as a silent partner rather than simply giving him a loan.  For the first time in the boy's life, Jeffrey is proud of his son and has had his will changed, so that when he dies Micah will inherit the Accountant's Office, which Jeffrey had bought in 1993.

During Christmas dinner, 2007, Micah and his girlfriend announced their engagement.  While, shockingly, Jeffrey likes the girl, he is rather warry of the idea of them getting married.  He doesn't think Micah is ready for marriage and even though the boy's been succeeding more in life recently he still isn't sure that his son is good enough for his future daughter-in-law.  Jeffrey is positive that it's only a matter of time before the girl realizes as much and leaves him.

Family

Naomi Lewis Jeffrey knew Naomi for most of his life. In many ways she was the only person who loved and accepted him for who he was. He's not sure what to do without her.
Adina Lewis Jeffrey and Adina used to get along really well, but now the two are constantly on opposite sides of a discussion. Fights are easily sparked, causing her gather to tread carefully whenever dealing with her because he doesn’t want to lose his daughter again.
Micah Lewis Jeffrey always considered Micah to be a disappointment. The two have never seen eye to eye, and have always appeared to be from completely different worlds. Jeffrey thinks that Micah is a weak and feeble boy who needs to be controlled. While the relationship remains like this following Micah’s car accident, Jeffrey has provided the boy with financial assistance, although more at the insistence of his wife than because he actually wants to help him. Because of their regular contact as the result of the the weekly dinners, the two are able to see each other without Jeffrey getting completely upset with Micah.  Since the announcement of is engagement, Jeffrey has resumed criticizing the boy more, especially in regards to the wedding.  It is his hope that he'll be able to prevent it from happening - he thinks Cassie is far too good for his son and will only end up leaving the boy.
Cassandra Davis Cassie is Jeffrey's future daughter-in-law.  While he frequently gets her name wrong - usually remembering it whenever discussing her with someone else, and periodically remembering it when talking to her or one of her children - he actually likes the girl.  He admires her spunk and thinks that she's probably good for Micah.  However, now that she and Micah are engaged, he worries.  Jeffrey thinks she's far too good for the boy and fears the day that she realizes as much as well.
Nicholas Lewis Jeffrey's father was a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War. He was an abusive, alcohol, who never got along with his son. He passed away in 1975.
Vanessa Lewis Jeffrey's mother was a stay at home mother. Because of Nicholas' insistence that his son not be coddled, Vanessa never developed a strong relationship with her son. Vanessa was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the late 1980's. For less than a year she lived with her son and his family, but Jeffrey quickly decided that taking care of her was too difficult and moved her into a nursing home. She's still alive and he visits on a weekly basis, but she doesn't usually recognize him.
The Marchais

Jeffrey's sister, Amber, lives in Belleville with her husband, George.  He sees her on the occasional holiday and gets periodic updates on her from his parents. Amber and George have one son, Nicholas, who also lives in Belleville with his wife, Diana, and their two children, Terry and Vanessa.

The Allens

Jeffrey's sister, Sara, lives in Stanton Hills with her husband, Edward. He sees her on the occasional holiday and gets periodic updates on her from his parents.

The Rosenstones

Most of the Jeffrey's in-law's live in Belleville.  He has regular contact with his mother- and father-in-law, Niel and Sidney.  He only hears from his brother-in-law, Craig, and Craig's wife, Cecilia, sporadically.

Brad Rosenstone Jeffrey's nephew, Craig and Cecilia's son.  He has very little regular contact with Brad, but did insist that he be one of Micah's groomsmen.
