Personality
Getting to know Harry can take a life time. His guarded and it passes off him not liking someone or him being a extremely harsh. For Harry it's easier that way, and there only really small moments when you see the person that is actually Harry. Those sweet and caring moments, are with his daughter, his wife, or while working with a sick child.
Part of what leads him to be so mysterious is the fact that he rarely speaks with his co-workers. He rarely instigates a conversation but will speak when spoken too. Jokes seem rare to him by the eyes of his co-workers which gives him the advantage when he cracks one. Harry also does know about the comments surrounding him by his co-workers, due to his dislike of sharing anything personal about himself.
However when Harry goes into a PTSD moment, many find it even harder to work with him. He's easy to startle and when he is startled he tends to get angry and will lash out at who ever caused it. Harry knows his triggers and does what he can to avoid them. Those Triggers are crowds, fights, or police. Normally if he realizes that he was in the wrong, he may apologize when he's alone with the person...after all, it's not their fault.
But when he's with his daughter and wife, the real Harry shines through. He feels comfortable and safe with both of them. It's with them that he jokes, he plays around and finds it easy to relax around them. They are his world and Harry will die for them. For Harry when he's around them, he doesn't have a panic attack or anything like that.
Harry also feel when he is working with his children patients that they are innocent from anything and its his job to make them feel comfortable. To see him with the children after he's just snapped at some one or been rude to you is a complete eye opener.
A British accent still escapes his lips even though he's lived in Pleasant Port for only a year. He's proud of his accent which is the reason why he uses the British slang.
Personal History
Born in London and the eldest of three to Sandy and Dr. Alistair Gowan, Harry didn't want to become a doctor until he saw the horrors that came out of the reign of Idi Amin in Uganda. For him it was hard to understand what would lead a person to do such things but he did know that he wanted to help solve the problem. So he went into medical school, something that pleased his father mainly because their father was a doctor as well.
Graduating from medical school, Harry signed up with a traveling with the Mercy Ships that traveled around the African coasts. He loved his work and the fact that his work seemingly loved him as well, did little to boost an ego with him. However he left Mercy Ships and went to work with a friend who had left earlier to start a private clinic in the heart of Africa.
Working with him, Harry found a near peace. It was there that he worked cases involving everything from TB to assisting people with AIDS get the proper medication. It was something that he enjoyed doing, and he rarely felt like returning home. However he did occasionally, mainly to just try and get sponsors for their cause. That searching for a sponsor led him to meet his soon to be wife.
She had been serving coffee then and he was in France meeting several people for funding. It was there that Muse was dealing with a customer who was on a the phone and being rather rude. While he ignored her, The man didn't ignore Harry. They got to talking and Harry offered to take her to dinner—with out phones.
The two hit it off after a month of dating but before long Harry was called back to working out in China with his friends. Promising to keep in touch he moved off to China and worked in a small clinic. While there he met all sorts of people, yet he wasn't ready for what fate had in store for him.
It was in China that he met Mia-Ning. While she was pregnant with her first, Harry knew she desired it to be a boy mainly because of the over population and China's views on the sexes. He attempted to inform her that having a daughter wasn't that bad and if she desired that she could put her up for adoption and some one from around the world would take her and love her. Still Mia-Ning was upset when she had a daughter.
It was because of those conversations between them that made Harry fear that she would do something drastic. When he discovered Mia-Ning attempting to drown the baby he knew that it was time to act. Taking the baby from her, Harry soon found himself a single father when he grew attach to the baby, Daiyu, and legally adopted her.
Returning he found Musette waiting for him and though it was rather shaky at first he attempted to prove he cold be both a single father and a boyfriend. It was because of the two women in his life that Harry remained in England working with Felix Talbot, his sisters husband in a local clinic. Still it didn't do anything to help him with the fact that he wanted to travel and do more work in the field.
So when one of his old friends from Mercy Ships sent him word that he was going to Russia for three months, Harry jumped at the idea. Promising to return, Harry went to Russia and worked in the clinic. He never knew that it would a long time before returning to his home and family.
He was there during the unsteady times before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Knowing it was a dangerous time, Harry and his companions were certain that they would be protected by the fact that they were doctors. He was wrong for one night the Russian Army invaded the small clinic and claimed them to be spies.
A trial was held and Harry still doubts that it was at all legal. But they were found guilty and sent to a Russian Prison. Loosing sight of his two friends, Harry was soon placed in the hands of the Vory. With their assistance, Harry learned that your life was told in tattoos and that if you didn't have any you'd be dead. So he became tattooed like one of them.
Back in England, Harry's family never lost hope of his return. To them he simply disappeared and they didn't know what happened to him. Felix lead the charge with several other doctor without borders teams to try and find him. Finally after several months after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Felix discovered that Harry was still alive and in prison. Getting him out was going to be difficult, he knew that much but he would do what ever it took.
Meanwhile, Harry was making friends in the Russian Prison. The knowledge that he was a doctor had become rather well known and he worked to heal the prisoners who didn't want to go to the medical personnel in fear of retaliation from their enemies. Still he wasn't willing to become like them. He did what they asked and the gave him protection, even though at times he too became the target of several people. Still his allies protected him and Harry was able to survive—barely.
It was a day Harry would never forget when he was freed. Felix, Gerry, and Muse was there to see him back at the Embassy and it felt good to be legally back on British soil. While he was placed in the hospital wing of the embassy, Harry attempted to shield the others from the horrors that he had seen or the people he had treated. He was given medication to help sleep and finally released from the hospital.
The first night he spent at home, he slept on the floor finding the bed too uncomfortable. Slowly however he became accustomed to being in England, the crowds and just living day to day in the 'normal world' However things were changed with him. For starters he got a gun shortly after he returned. When his younger brother asked him about it, Harry was silent and simply shrugged it off.
But the interesting fact was that he finally asked Muse to marry him. When she said yes, they married and finally became a family with Daiyu. The desire to travel was out of him for some time as he worked at a local hospital with Felix. The two were wonders in the ER, though Felix would at times cover for Harry with his sudden panic attacks from rushes of patients or other issues. Felix was the one who helped Harry to realize his triggers and suggested he tell Muse, Harry refused not wanting to simply get her worried about the past.
However even living in England caused problems for Harry when he was unable to get away from the fears that were slowly coming to haunt him. So he sent a resume to Pleasant Port Hospital just out of curiosity. When they called and said they'd love to meet him, Harry went and was offered the job of doctor in the ER with Peds rotations. Returning home he offered the idea to Muse and the family moved to America.
Now, Harry is working in the hospital, seeing a shrink (though he downplays most of his fears to her) and secretly suffers from PTSD. All the while he is still supportive of his wife and his daughter...no matter what the cost.

While he was 'missing in Russia' she lived with Gerry and Felix Talbot in order to find some sort of a safety net. She also took care of Daiyu while living with Gerry and Felix. It was then that she bonded with the girl like a mother and daughter.
Daiyu Gowan (9)- His adoptive daughter. She is a native of Hong Kong. Her mother was a patient at his clinic while he was working in Hong Kong. When Daiyu was born, her mother attempted to kill her by drowning the baby but Harry stopped her. Instead of searching for a mother, Harry adopted the girl and brought her to Pleasant Port when he moved there. She his angel and Harry loves her like she was his own flesh and blood. Like her father she is fluent in Chinese as well as English.
Geraldine Talbot-(31) Sister. They are close but Gerry doesn't agree with his always needing to work. She works in London and is a writer.

Devin Gowan- (29) Currently living in New York, Dev is the baby of the family and working on his doctoral thesis in Sociology.
Kellyn Vance- (28) His soon to be sister in law. She is currently living with them planning her wedding since she wants it to be in Pleasant Port. Working as a Fashion Designer, she is designing her own wedding dress while working at an out of town Wedding Planners office.
