Like most men his age, George exudes intelligence and wisdom earned in a lifetimes experience. He is the ideal civic leader, a man who leads by example. A conservative man, that attends church every Sunday and embodies family values. Yet even though he is a conservative with strong beliefs, he know he must govern for all. He does not allow his own personal beliefs to interfere in executing the duties of his office. It is said that one of his most admired qualities is he is a man of few words. Where most politicians can’t keep their mouths shut on or off the camera, George chooses his words carefully only weighing in on things he believes his input is required. He makes every word count taking all sides into account. A life long resident of Pleasant Port, he truly loves the town and genuinely cares about its future. To some, he seems cold and unfriendly. To those that know him, he is a serious man, with a dry sense of humor that leans toward the ironic side. He is a man at home in church or at a poker game with his buddies. For the many different facets of this man, everyone in town knows that one man embodies the virtues of sensibility, responsibility and accountability. His name is George Covington. 

Personal History

George was the only boy born to Thaddeus & Virginia Covington. Born into an already wealthy family, his education was first rate. His parents ran a tight household. The children had a rigid schedule, with little time for play. The Covington’s were one of the first families of Pleasant Port and they were to act accordingly. George’s father taught him that even though they had a great deal of money that with it came a great responsibility. It was the families duty to look after the less fortunate and the town. He earned good marks in school. In 1963, he applied and was accepted into Princeton University.

He majored in both Business Administration and Finance. He graduated in 1967 with a B.A in both and immediately set about putting them to good use. It was also in 1967 while living in New York City he met and married, Martha Alden. She was a perfect fit for George coming from a prominent banking family in New York City. Shortly after their wedding, Martha’s father passed. She was an only child and his fortune passed to her. As he was busy building the family fortune, he brought her to live in Pleasant Port. There she could raise their family in his ancestral home. The birth of their first child, Julia, in 1968 was followed by the birth of their second child, Nathan, in 1969, and their last, Wes, in 1971.

George quadrupled the family fortune in the years that followed with shrewd investments in the new up and coming markets like computers and pharmaceuticals. In 1998 the then mayor of Pleasant Port was embroiled in a scandal with an out of town developer. George became incensed over this scandal so much he decided to run against him in the 2000 election, beating him soundly. Since then, George has set about bringing his small town into the modern age without destroying what he calls its best small town qualities. He enjoyed popular support and in 2004 was elected to another term as mayor unopposed.
