Personality
A geek and proud of it, he's one of those rare people that know whom he is and is, more or less, content with that. While he knows that he isn't like Brad Pitt in terms of the looks department, he knows that he's attractive to some and, as long as it's the right person, that's all that matters. He knows that his interests aren't as mainstream as some, ranging from video games to comic books to computers and beyond, but it is to him and others. He is and will always be himself and, while it sucks when some aren't happy with that, it's their problem and not his.
That being said, he really does want everyone to like him and does try to get along with everyone. He's overly empathic and has a hard time not feeling the pain of others because he would bend over backwards to take away their pain if he could. He's very good at listening to other people's problems but has a hard time sharing his own problems. He knows that he should start dating again but doesn't know if lightning can strike twice. Still, he's going to try because to him, that's one of the two missing pieces in his life. That and children. And not just because it would get his mother off of his case.... although that's a nice bonus.
Personal History
Valevictorian of his high school in California, beautiful girlfriend whom he loved, full-ride scholarship to Cal Tech, life was going great for Filo Felvish upon graduating high school. His girlfriend was a year behind so, instead of going to MIT, he stayed in the area and went to Cal Tech instead. However, by his junior year, he believed that he ruined it all with a simple question -
"Would you marry me?"
He had the ring, he was on one knee, he had everything perfect. Except that she said no. He was stunned by that as she explained that they were too young, even though he said that he was going to wait until they both finished school. It never occurred to him that she would've said no and it hurt him like nothing had ever done. A few months later, she broke up with him, telling him that she still and probably would always still love him but they would never get beyond what had happened. So he did the only thing that he could think of - he ran away.
He moved to Massachusettes and went to MIT, withdrawing back into himself like he had done before. He threw himself into his work, becoming innocuous to everyone around him as if he wasn't there. It wasn't until he was midway through his master's degree that a chance conversation at a coffee shop in Boston changed his life. Two guys were talking about how hard it was for people to get to know each other on campus, especially in a college metropolis like Boston was. Filo casually brought up the concept of computer networking being applied to people, connecting them like MySpace had done but just for college students. Over the next few hours, the three of them had worked out the basic premises of their design with Filo providing mostly how to manage it technologically speaking. What he didn't realize was that the other two of them actually went ahead to do it at their school or just how successful their creation would later become.
Less than a year later, Filo gets a call from a law firm asking him to show up. When he does, he sees three lawyers and the two guys from the coffee shop. They explain that they went with the creation and that as a creator involved, he was entitled to be a partner in the enterprise. After all, they didn't want to get sued if they went public by someone and lose all the money in the courts. So Filo throws out 1% as a number which confuses everyone in the room. He said that he wasn't really interested in the business side of anything and thought that 1% was more than fair for the small part that he's played. So they agreed and everyone went their separate ways.
Of course, he had no idea that even 1% would become as profitable as it had. He sold his 1% early on once he saw the first offer made, which he later realized must've looked stupid at the time but it was more than plenty of money that he didn't have to worry about money nor would his family. He paid off their house, paid for a house of his own in a small town called Pleasant Port and, after anonymous donations to various charities, he left the rest alone in investments, living on the interest alone. He doesn't think of himself as rich and still drives the same car that he had in high school. More importantly, he doesn't want anyone else to think that he's rich either. He just wanted to be himself.
That's when it occurred to him that being himself is what he's been missing all of this time, ever since leaving California. Sure, it hurt and probably will always hurt inside his heart but he did need to move on, to start living again in a life on his own terms. After all, if he wasn't going to do it now, he never would. So, instead of simply retiring, he decided to go into business, taking ownership of the town's local arcade and managing it as well. He's been doing it ever since, relearning what it is to be Filo Felvish and getting happier along the way. He's now looking to expand out the arcade to involve other kinds of gaming - a high-tech computer LAN system, high-definition televisions and gaming consoles, maybe some board, card and other gaming as well. He's currently working on the finishing touches of it before he attempts to get city approval for the expansion.
