Style: If Ethan had his way, he'd wear clothing that was similar in comfort level to his flight suit or even his utility uniform, since that is what he was used to wearing for a good portion of his life. This rugged type of casualness pervades most areas of his life, from the way he wears his hair, to the sometimes scruffy growth of stubble or even to the donning his sporty gear. But he is capable of dressing up, as evidenced by the suits he will wear when coaching basketball games.

Personality

Growing up in a military family, Ethan has always been surrounded by the ideals that the various branches exemplified. One might accuse him of having been indoctrinated which certainly would be true if he hadn't specifically chosen the Air Force. That alone was a subtle means of striking out on his own to march to his own beat. As it turned out, Ethan was drawn to the Air Force motto of Integrity, Service and Excellence, and he tends to translate that to other areas of his life. His word is his bond, completely solid and loyal. He is ready and willing to help someone in need. And he strives to do his best in everything that he does.

In many ways, Ethan is an enigma. While working or dealing with tasks at hand, he is passionate, determined and goal oriented. He likes organization and efficiency. Common sense, logic and ingenuity are all things he holds in high regard. When off duty, he's an easy going, unassuming man who likes to enjoy life, especially when it involves hanging out with his friends or even his brothers when they come to visit.

Personal History

Ethan Timeline

Ethan was born into a military family, with several individuals on the paternal side serving the country in some branch of the armed services. Specifically, his father Ellison Hauer, Sr. attended the prestigious United States Naval Academy. After his graduation, he moved on to join the US Marines. Ellison was preparing for service in the Vietnam War when he would meet his future wife, Elaine Murrow, a nurse serving with the Red Cross. They would eventually marry and in between tours of duty, sons Ellison, Jr. and Ethan were born in 1967 and 1973 respectively. Elaine would become pregnant again in 1979, but it was clear early on that this pregnancy was not like the others. The birth of her third child, Evan, was difficult and left her severely weakened. She would later die of childbirth related complications. Elaine's death was devastating for the Hauer men but Ellison, Sr. rose to the challenge of bringing up his three sons by himself. He settled down in Annapolis and accepted a position serving and teaching at his Alma Mater.

Growing up, it was always expected that the Hauer boys would all follow their father's footsteps. In fact, Ethan's older brother was so eager to do so that he enlisted right out of high school. Ethan was slightly more thoughtful in his approach. From an early age, he was quite taken with anything that was fast, but was especially drawn to planes. In his teen years, he began to harbor the desire to become a fighter pilot. He also wanted to go to college like his father did. During his high school years he began to look into ways that he could achieve both. In 1989, much to his father's surprise, he applied to the Air Force Academy. He was given a nomination based on the fact that he was a child of career military personnel and a Veteran. His admission to the competitive school was also helped by his solid grades, his leadership in school activities and his participation as a three sport athlete. After his graduation in 1990 from high school, he headed off to Colorado. He ended up competing for the the Fighting Falcon's basketball team.

In May 1994, he graduated from the Air Force Academy with a Bachelor's of Science in Political Science (with a minor in Foreign Studies/Middle East concentration). Later that year, he joined the Air Force and began Officer Training School. By the fall of that year, with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, he began Undergraduate Flight Training. By the summer of 1996, he had completed IFF, SERE and The Basic Course training. He was assigned to fly F-16 fighters and after some general flight time, he was deemed flight ready and was deployed for his first official tour of duty in the fall of 1996 with a promotion to 1st Lieutenant. The tour didn't last long, but in early 1997, he was deployed again overseas as part of Operation Northern Watch.

In the summer of 2001, after serving five years active duty, Ethan began his three years of inactive reserve duty. He had planned on attending college to attain his Master's Degree. His plans changed shortly after 9/11 as he volunteered for another tour of duty. This time, he was deployed to Afghanistan. After this stint, he settled down in Connecticut with plans to attend UCONN for his Master's studies. Ethan also began searching for a job in the civilian sector and in the fall of 2002, he heard of Pleasant Port Community College's need of a coach for the Women's Basketball team. Immediately after seeing the talent and also considering the opportunity to build the program, he accepted. He commuted to Pleasant Port for the remainder of that season while he finished his graduate studies, but in late 2003, Ethan moved into the town itself. Ethan has used the Air Force ideals (Integrity, Service, Excellence) in his coaching and he has since watched the PPCC team blossom into an annual junior college powerhouse.

In addition to his coaching duties, for the past 5 years, Ethan has been serving as an Air Force Reservist. He is required to report for duty at least one weekend per month plus an additional two weeks a year. He often will exceed this requirement because he has been tapped as a Reserve Squadron Leader, or flight instructor. He trains new pilots who are sent down to train with the reserves before they are sent off into active duty.

Family

Photobucket

Ellison Hauer, Sr. - Father
Ethan greatly admires and respects his father.

Photobucket

Ellison Hauer, Jr. - Older brother (40)

They get along but there is an unspoken rivalry to attain the most approval from their father.

Photobucket

Evan Hauer - Younger brother (28)

Ethan has always been rather close to him, especially because of the situation involving their mother's death. Also, since Ethan is the closest to him in age, Evan has often confided in him that he is unsettled by the pressure to live up to the family "legacy".

Cole Cleyburne - Ethan's roommate and best friend

The two met via an intra-service softball game between the Air Force and the Coast Guard. Even though they have known each other for a relatively short period of time, they have become quite close, and Ethan sees him as another brother.

Relationships with Other Characters

Amy Salinger - Ethan met her in the fall of 2006 when she came to him about concerns with one of the basketball players. Initially, he did find her very attractive and wanted to date her, but after he begged her to become the academic advisor for the team, he decided it wasn't a good idea to get involved with her. Plus, since Cole grew up with Amy and her sister, Carrie, he basically told Ethan that if he tried anything stupid there would be hell to pay.

Brendan Wright - Ethan met Bren through Cole and Amy and considers him a friend, despite some of his eccentricities that sometimes makes for awkward encounters. One of the more interesting ones occured on New Year's Day 2008 when Ethan recieved a disturbing voicemail from Bren in which he was paranoid about terrorists. After a worrisome call from Bren's sister, Kayla, Ethan went to check on him, hoping to be of some help. Even though he left not really sure he did, the event did play a small role in Ethan's decision to be activated for another tour of duty to Afghanistan.
Saleisha Factor - One of his star basketball players. He kinda has a soft spot for her because he knows how much she struggles in life and he appreciated that even with hardships, she gave 100% on the court. Unfortunately, in early January, following the death of her mother, Saleisha started down a self destructive path abusing drugs and alcohol. After a positive drug test, she was suspended from the team for a week. Upon her return, he was happy to see that the chance of being kicked off the squad permanently and losing her scholarship to Hartford was enough to get her back on track.
Farrah Covington - The two had a flirty little banter going for the longest time before they eventually slept together one night after Christmas. Before he left for Afghanistan, me mostly saw her in passing and now it's actually been months since he's seen her.
Corey Lindaugh - They play softball together, for one. But they share a general love of most sports. The two share an odd interest in up and coming talent on the farm teams of many of major sports clubs. Recently, Ethan was the one who informed Corey of the real reasons for Bren's skiddish behavior.

Georgina Patrick - Met her on Christmas Eve and she is an infamous resident of the "Hot House of Hoes" down the street from where Ethan and Cole live.

Billie Strummer - They both ended up at the beach bonfire and got into a little drinking challenge. After copious amounts of vodka shots, the two apparently ended up at her place for a memorable night of fun---which neither seems to remember.

Nathan Covington - Besides being neighbors, Ethan plays golf (something he learned from his father) with Nathan most sundays during the warmer months. Also, Nathan is a regular at the monthly poker games and random other notable sports viewing events that Ethan will host at his house on the giant wide screen TV.

Domitrae Francis - The two regularly shoot hoops and Ethan also has invited him over to watch sporting events.
Scott Archer - Ethan got to know Scott both through trips to Fresh Mex and also through Cole. They sometimes meet up to play basketball.
Travis Collins - Sometimes Ethan and Cole will meet up with Travis and Fletcher to play pool or shoot darts at Eight Balls.
Fletcher Montgomery - Sometimes Ethan and Cole will meet up with Fletcher and Travis to play pool or shoot darts at Eight Balls.
Adrienne Howe - One of his star basketball players
Anastasia Grebova - One of his star basketball players
Kaitlin Collins - Ethan has  met her several times at the pizzeria while she was waiting for Riley to get off work. They share an enjoyment of activities like mountain biking and climbing and Ethan has even mentioned in passing his desire to do the adventure race this summer. Since he, Cole and Amy need a fourth teammember, Ethan has considered asking her to take part given her enjoyment of some adventure racing components. A couple of times they've even talked about kayaking together but then Ethan left for Afghanistan. Now that he's back, he's hoping to put that all in motion.

Random Facts

Every year, Ethan and Cole travel to NYC for Fleet Week. Even though the Air Force really does nothing during the event, he kinda goes in honor of his parents (since they met at an event very similar to it "back in the day"). Another reason he does enjoy going is because he gets to frequent bars such as The Brass Monkey or The Heartland Brewery
