What I'm Doing With My Life
For the past year, I've been looking at getting into the Peace Corps. But as with a lot of things in life, that hasn't exactly panned out. So I've kinda been bumming around aimlessly while I figure out what's next. I am certified to teach middle school and high school English, but with the economy the way it is, a lot of schools are downsizing instead of hiring. Such is life. But be it sooner or later, I love the thought of having a classroom of my own and making a BIG, BIG difference in this world.
I'm Really Good At...
Writing poetry and prose, reading epic novels, teaching or working with children and young adults, kayaking, cooking, baking or cake decorating
And the Crystal Ball Says...
In the future (near or far), I'd like to be living and teaching in New York City (preferably Brooklyn). Eventually, I hope to go to Columbia University for my Masters and my Doctorate, studying urban education.
25 Random Things (Taken From Facebook)
25 random things, facts, habits, or goals....
- When I find a song I like, I tend to listen to it over and over and over.....
- I am in a sorority. Like, OMG! My pledge name is Ivory.
- I worked as a barista for 2 years at one of those NYC cupcake places that are all the rage....
- I love ethnic foods....everything from Thai Spicey Beef Salad to Falafels to Ethiopian stuff....
- I'm a self taught bartender.
- I once got drunk playing shots and ladders with friends using wine.
- Several years ago when researching my family tree, I discovered that a branch goes back to the 1500's in a little town of Guval near Penzance, Cornwall.
- I have four brothers and no sisters.
- When I first moved to NYC in 2003, I had no idea where I was going to live and I stayed at a YMCA in Greenpoint for a week until I found a roommate.
- I've never broken a bone (that I know of) and the only major surgery I've had has been getting my tonsils and my wisdom teeth taken out.
- Speaking of that, all four of my wisdom teeth were fully impacted and I only had novicane when they were yanked.
- I don't drive. But whereas some people can drive and just don't (to save money on gas, public transit....) I have never stepped behind a wheel. And neither have either of my parents.
- In 2003, I went on a 90 mile, seven day kayaking trip in the Adirondack mountains. I only took three 10 pound wet/dry bags of "stuff"-clothes, food and sleeping materials. And yes, for the whole week, there were no real bathrooms or showers. :)
- I played tennis 4 years in high school and four years in college. In high school, I played doubles and every year I had a different partner. In college, I played both and at the end of the season, the championships that my college played in was held at the same place where the US Open is held every year. We didn't play on the main courts and there was hardly anyone there, but still...
- I've gone to see The Donnas in concert twice because one of my friends is a groupie. But at the show at Brown University, I got to see Joan Jett play too, so that was pretty awesome.
- When I was younger, I was in a Masonic Youth group. At one point, I held the leadership position in my local group called Beloved Queen. And then later I held the state position and got to speak at Grand Lodge in New York City (way before I eventually moved down there). I got to wear a crown and sash, so that was interesting. Ask for pics and I'll show ya...lol
- I absolutely, positively HATE the NY Yankees. And while I generally root for Boston to beat them, I'm starting to hate them as well. Basically, it comes down to both teams buying their talent instead of nurturing it in their farm systems (moreso the Yankees in the past, but with Boston's recent success....) My favorite baseball team is the Minnesota Twins and it was because the Rochester Red Wings are their farm team and I saw Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer play here (where I live) before they got called up. Before I chose Minnesota, I was contemplating having the Texas Rangers as my team....so glad that never happened...LOL
- I started college as an Elementary Education Major. And while I have tons of patience with little kids (like my niece Eliza), I eventually realized I was too cerebral for that age group. Now I want to teach students in grades 8-10 if I can.
- I love diversity. And among many other indicators of this, I have dated *ahem* men from pretty much every race, ethnicity and background....White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, Jewish, tall, short, older, younger, foreign, domestic, crazy neurotic, sex-a-holics or kinky SOB's....basically...you name it...(yes, perhaps TMI, but owel....)
- In one of my first semesters in college, I took a cosmology (think the stars and space, not that hair styling profession) based physics course where we spent pretty much every class talking about all the Stephan Hawking mumbo jumbo. And even though I didn't necessarily understand everything and could never hope to be a total smartass in it, I do find it interesting.
- As part of a sorority event, I participated and won a pie eating contest two years in a row.
More to come...
