In many ways, Brendan can be described as the quintessential tall, dark, and handsome guy that women allegedly dream about.  While he doesn’t exactly tower over men Bren often appears taller than he really is as the result of good posture and an intimidating presence.  Even though Bren himself isn’t a particularly scary person, he is very aware of just how intimidating he can look when he wants to – a fact that he has absolutely no problem taking advantage of.  Adding to this is Bren’s muscular build.  While he’s not in the best shape of his life he takes pride in remaining in good shape.  Bren can frequently be found working out either at the gym or the pool and often pushes himself beyond what his body can handle.  He realizes that he’s probably doing his body, especially his knee, more damage than good, but he is a firm supporter of the belief that there is no gain without pain.  As a result of this, as well as the osteoarthritis in his knee, Bren can occasionally be seen walking with a limp.  When his knee is acting up he’ll wear a brace on it, and when it’s really bad he’s been known to us a cane.

While Bren frequently shaved his head growing up, since his attack he has allowed his hair to grow out, if for no reason other than to hide the scar on the back of his head.  It’s not so much that he’s bothered by scars – in fact, he’s rather proud of his other scars, viewing them as monuments to different parts of his life – but rather that he hates having to explain that one.  Brendan feels the same way about his tattoos – while they’re pretty self explanatory, he feels that they are a monument to a huge period of his life, and doesn’t regret getting them.

Usually, Bren will style his hair with a bit of gel, but when he’s feeling lazy he ignores it all altogether.  Similarly, he usually goes clean shaven, but periodically he’ll grow out a goatee, sometimes with and sometimes without a moustache.  He goes to great lengths to maintain a tan throughout the year, believing that when he allows it to fade his skin takes on an almost sickly shade of pale.  As a result of this, the only aspect of him that doesn’t fit the stereotype of the tall, dark, and handsome man is his eyes.  While Bren would describe them as grey, in different lights they sometimes appear hazel or even a pale blue.  Making his eye colour even more mysterious is the fact that Brendan is extremely prone to squinting, almost as if he needs glasses or the sun is in his eyes.  This is especially noticeable when he smiles, which is one of his two most common facial expressions.  Usually, when Bren isn’t smiling he’s frowning intensely, to the point that he’s almost glowering.

Personality

To those who don’t know him, Brendan Wright appears to be nothing more than a simple man who embraces all that is stereotypical of a guy living in a small town.  Embracing his redneck status, Bren enjoys the simpler things in life; a good beer, trucks, guns, and dogs.    He is a card carrying member of the NRA and views his time in the army as the most successful and productive period of time in his life.  Proud of his heritage, Bren’s views of the world often border on being xenophobic.  He firmly supports the expansion of Western beliefs and believes that those who immigrate to the US should be required to assimilate into American society.  In particular, he is adamant about immigrants being required to learn English.  These views can easily be seen as arrogance on his part, a point which Brendan will usually agree with.  While he will acknowledge flaws in both his own personality and the way his country acts, it doesn’t stop him from believing that he is a great guy living in a highly superior country.

While Bren is a rather rebellious person who enjoys pushing boundaries, he responds surprisingly well to authority and structure.  Brendan believes that in order to be able to prosper he requires an external authoritarian force that will enforce a strict structure in his life.  He doesn’t see himself as a natural leader; while he is very capable of thinking outside of the box and making rapid decisions in stressful situations, he prefers to be the follower of orders.  He dislikes the responsibility that comes with leadership and despises being held accountable for the actions of others.

Brendan is rather conservative in regards to his sexuality.  He’s not overly showy about it – he’s open to his family and friends, but doesn’t think that the whole world needs to know.  Flamboyance irritates a great deal, and he attributes the oppression that he has been forced to deal with as the result of his being gay to those who insist on throwing what should be a private aspect of their life into the faces of others.  He believes that if more homosexuals were a little less out there then they would be more readily accepted by mainstream society.  He does have a serious problem with organized religion and it’s more homophobic stance on the matter.  While he’s not asking to be married to another man in a Catholic church, he does believe that the oppressive views of the church only do harm.  As a result, because he believes that he has been rejected by religion, he rejects religion himself.

Since his attack, Brendan has become rather scared of homophobia.  The only time he’ll back away from a fight is when it’s related to his homosexuality, and he’s rather cautious about who he’s out with.  However, despite this, once he has come out to someone he is a bit of a flirt, regardless of their gender or sexuality.  He rarely thinks anything is going to come out of his flirting, he just thinks it’s fun.  Brendan suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder as the result of his attack.  While he is in therapy in an attempt to treat it and is medicated for it, he still has triggers that occasionally set him off.  The biggest of these is physical contact; Bren gets highly upset at unexpected physical contact, especially if initiated by someone who he isn’t close with or doesn’t know at all.  This trigger has seriously disabled his romantic life.  As the result of it, the few instances where he has attempted to engage in a relationship with someone since his attack have been quickly ended as the result of his inability to be intimate with another person.  Similarly, when in large crowds he gets nervous, to the point that he is almost claustrophobic.  Bren also is extremely uncomfortable with walking in certain parts of town while by himself at night, and when he does so he frequently convinces himself that he is being followed. While he has been told that his triggers will lessen with time and therapy as it has been several years he is beginning to think that is nothing more than a lie his therapist has told him in an attempt to keep him coming back.

Personal History

His Timeline

By the late 1970s Rupert Wright had it all.  A wonderful, obedient wife who was as devoted to God as he was, two adorable daughters, age five and two, a nice house on a farm that was just starting to bring in money, and the large bank loan to pay for it all.  What he didn’t have, what he couldn’t even really afford, was the son who would carry on his name.  Which is why in late 1977 when he found out that his wife was pregnant once more Rupert Wright was overjoyed.

In early spring, 1978, he finally got his wish and his son, Brendan, was born.  Instantly Rupert began trying to make the boy into his ideal of the perfect man’s man, the son that he could be proud of.  Brendan was to be raised on the farm, surrounded by things like guns, sports, and cars.  And, one day, he would get married, have children of his own, and inherit the family farm.  More so than his sisters, Brendan Wright was to be his father’s legacy.

But life, as it happens, had other plans for the boy.

At the age of three, to his father’s great displeasure, Bren took to dancing.  His eldest sister, Michelle, had been enrolled in dance lessons and one day, while waiting with his mother for a class to end, the toddler began mimicking the dancers, doing his best to join.  The boy appeared to be having so much fun that his mother felt that she had to enrol him.  In the years to come, Rupert would go to great lengths to try to distract Brendan from his love of dance, getting him involved in working on cars, teaching him to shoot, enrolling him in Cub Scouts and numerous sports teams, but nothing worked.  As unmanly as it might have been, Brendan loved it.

The dynamic of Brenda’s family changed rather drastically shortly after his tenth birthday.  For some time his eldest sister, Michelle, had been complaining of headaches and bouts of dizziness.  While at first she dismissed it, as it persisted she finally relented and went to the doctor, who diagnosed her with a glioma in her brain stem.  In an attempt to ignore his sister’s illness, Bren threw himself into his dancing – and activity that he and Michelle had bonded over for years –and began experimenting with it, mixing his classical ballet training with moves that he had seen in music video.  Michelle passed away by the end of the year, causing Brendan to throw himself into his dance even more.

Still disapproving of his son’s feminine past time, Rupert began to go out of his way to try to make Bren into a man.  After the two completed the restoration of an Oldsmobile 88 that he had bought before Michelle’s diagnosis, Rupert bought a second car for them to restore, hoping that it might distract the boy.  While Brendan showed great skill with the car, it was clear that his heart was only half in it.  Finally, in the early 90s Rupert relented and went to see his son perform, coming to realize that Brendan was rather good at dancing.  Soon after he allowed his son to be enrolled in several other dance classes, including some modern dance classes, and Bren began to dance competitively.

It was during this time that Bren began to realize that he wasn’t like other guys.  Puberty seemed to sneak up on him and while all his male friends were talking about girls, Brendan couldn’t help but notice attractive qualities in other guys.  Not wanting to accept that he was different, Bren forced himself to ignore his sexual desires and, like his friends, talked about girls, often making up stories about the things he wanted to do with his fellow dancers.  In an attempt to prove to himself that he wasn’t different, that he wasn’t gay, Bren asked Sophia Clark to be his girlfriend in December, 1994.  The two had known each other since his first modern dance class and had been dance partners for almost three years.  There was no girl who Bren felt closer to at the time, making her the perfect person to make him straight.

Brendan’s plan failed.  Even as he was dating Sophia he found himself desiring other boys and his feeble attempts to be a good boyfriend only made him sure of his sexuality.  Finally, on Valentine’s Day, 1995, he had sex with her, figuring that if there was any chance of fixing him it would be through that.  The attempt failed and even as he was with her Brendan found himself imagining that he was with another guy.  The next day he broke up with her and came out, quickly swearing her to secrecy.  Not wanting to come out to his parents, and fearing that everyone in Pleasant Port must know, Brendan did what he thought was the only logical thing; he dropped out of school and enlisted in the US army.

Posted in Fort Bliss, Texas, it didn’t take Brendan long to fall in love with every aspect of the army.  While he missed his dancing, the strict structure of the army highly appealed to him.  He took to the principles of the army and believed that he was really doing something worthwhile with his life.  It also helped that it was there that he met Christian Evanski.  While the two were cautious at first, neither wanting to mess with the army’s policy on homosexuality, a relationship developed between them fairly quickly.  For the first time in his life, Brendan felt as if he was able to be himself, even if he was still hiding.

In October, 1996, Bren was deployed to Bosnia.  This deployment did two things for him; first it cemented his relationship with Christian – prior to it, he had never thought that he could be that concerned for the wellbeing of another person- and it convinced him that he had done the right then when he had enlisted.  As far as Bren was concerned, he would be a army grunt for the rest of his life and Christian would always be by his side.

It was because of this sense of self righteousness that Brendan thought coming out to his parents was a good idea.  The actual meeting between him and his parents turned out disastrous though.  Bren’s mother simply cried, saying that her son had been stolen from the path of righteousness by the devil himself, while his father stewed in anger.  When the older man finally spoke it was with hatred.  His dreams of the perfect man’s man had been crushed and he blamed everything, from Brendan’s dancing to the way that his mother had coddled him as a child.  Finally he threw Bren and Christian out of  this house, saying that no son of his way gay, and if Bren was gay then it meant that he wasn’t his son.

While the meeting was upsetting, Bren was far too stubborn to show it.  He resigned himself to the fact that his parents wouldn’t accept him and decided that if they wanted nothing to do with him then he in turn wanted nothing to do with them.  Similarly, he decided that if their god hated homosexuals so much then he had no time for their god.

This rejection of his family and religion would come to a test shortly after.  In 1998 Brendan’s sister, Kayla, married, but he refused to attend the wedding, claiming that he couldn’t get the leave.  The next year he was deployed once more, this time to Kosovos.  Bren was part way through his deployment when he fractured his knee during an attack.  Soon after he was shipped back to the US where he received surgery on the knee.  After some time in a military hospital he was given leave and he headed back to Pleasant Port to visit his sister and friends.

While reconnecting with some friends from high school at the Fun Bar Bren made what he would later consider to be the biggest mistake of his life and let his sexuality slip.  While the friends didn’t seem particularly bothered by it, a few who had remembered his dancing weren’t even all that surprised, other patrons of the bar were less than happy.  While waiting for a taxi at the end of the night Darnell Johnson came up behind Brendan and attacked him with a baseball bat. Before the attack could get fatal one of the bar’s staff came out, scaring the man off.

Brendan was rushed to the hospital and from there his life changed. Darnell was charged with the assault and Brendan hired Robert Gray to sue for damages.  Because the assault was clearly a hate crime, the result of Darnell’s homophobia, the army was forced to investigate Brendan’s sexuality, eventually discharging him.  Soon after, in an attempt to preserve his career Christian ended their relationship.  Brendan ended up wining the lawsuit, although the money awarded was just enough to cover his medical bills.  To his great disappointment, Darnell all but got off for the assault, receiving a greatly reduced sentence due to time served and some community service.

Following his release from the hospital Bren moved in with his sister and her husband.  What was to be a temporary arrangement gradually became permanent. Brendan got a job working as a mechanic and after the birth of his nephew moved into the guest house on his sister’s farm.

Facts

When Brendan was younger he was forced to watch his sisters' dance classes, until one day when he decided that he wanted to try as well.  Despite his father's dislike of it, he was soon enrolled in numerous dance classes, which he continued taking right up until he enlisted in the army. When he came out to his parents, his father blamed this for his sexuality.

Brendan was in Boy Scouts as a boy.  While he would like to be involved in it now, the organization's position on open homosexuality prevents him from doing so.

Even though he doesn't necessarily agree fully with the party's position, Bren is a supporter of the Republican party.  He thinks that the Democrats are supported primarily by immigrants, hippies, and flamers.
Brendan watches Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance and Americas Best Dance Crew religiously.  He is extremely critical of the contestants and often, rather arrogantly, declares that he is a better dancer than them.  This hasn't prevented him from favouriting his favouite dances on YouTube though.

Family

Rupert and Lisa Wright

Brendan's parents, Rupert and Lisa, used to run a farm on the outskirts of Pleasant Port.  They're a very traditional and old fashioned couple and do not understand their son's sexuality.  Since Bren came out to his parents his father has refused to talk to him while his mother insists that Brendan needs ot make ammends for his sinful actions.  The two retired and sold their farm in 1997, moving to Stanton Hills.

Michelle Wright
Brendan's eldest sister was five years older than him.  Despite the age difference the two were very close growing up.  When Michelle was sixteen she was diagnosed witha  glioma tumour in her brainstem; treatment didn't help and within a year she was dead.  Her death really shook the Wrights, especially Brendan.
Kayla Green
Brendan's other sister is two years older than him.  While the two were never really close while growing up, they've gotten closer since Michelle's death and she is the only person in his family who is alright with Bren's sexuality.  Shortly after marrying, Kayla and her husband bought a farm on the outskirts of Pleasant Port.  When Brendan was attacked, Kayla instantly took to caring for her brother and insisted on him moving in with her and her family.
Stewart Green
Brendan's brother-in-law is very different from Brendan.  It's very clear that he's not a farmer at heart, doing so only because it's his wife's dream.  He and Brendan get along, to an extent.  Stewart isn't really comfortable with his brother-in-law's sexuality but the two have an unspoken agreement - he doesn't make an issue of it as long as Brendan isn't overly flamboyant about it.
Tyler Green
Brendan absolutely loves his nephew.  He's always willing to babysit and, in many ways, considers the boy to be the son he's likely to never have.  Because of Tyler's last name, Green, and Kayla's choice in colour for her bridesmaid dresses (hunter green), Bren insists on calling the boy 'Hunter', to the displeasure of Stewart.

Pets

Ike Stonewall Dougout

Bren's four pointers and two barn cats are all named after American military figures.

He's had Dugout since before he was in the army, Stonewall he got soon after coming home, and Guts is his newest dog Ike was his oldest dog, Bren got him when he was around 15, but he had to be put down after being hit by a car.

Granny and Bull Bren both somehow acquired - he isn't sure exactly how - after moving in with the Greens.

Guts

Granny Bull

Friends

Character Relationship
Sophia Clark Sophia is one of Brendan's best friends.  They met through dance as children, and have shared a bond ever since.   They dated briefly, although the relationship ended when Brendan came to terms with his sexuality; as a result Sophia was the first person that he came out to.  While the relationship didn't last, their friendship did.
Grayson Cleyburne

Bren's friendship with Cole has always been rocky.  The two have known each other for years, but their differences have caused them to butt heads occassionally.  Since Brendan's attack, he has become more and more nervous around the other man, along with anyone else who he sees as a potential threat to his safety.  On New Years Day, 2007, Bren managed to convince himself that Cole was either a terrorist or a homophobe who might attack him.  While he has since calmed down, he hasn't really been reassured that Cole is actually a real friend.

Ethan Hauer Bren met Ethan through Amy and Cole, after his attack.  In many ways he considers this friendship to be easier than others, simply because Ethan doesn't know how he was prior to the attack. However, despite this ease, Bren is still often at odds with Ethan and occassionally views him as a potential threat.
Corey Lindaugh Bren met Corey after he was set up with him by Amy.  He is really attracted to the guy, and hopes to develop something with him.  However, he is also rather certain that his own insecurities are going to ruin it, and worries that they're just too different.
Amy Salinger Bren has known Amy for most of his life.   He considers her to be one of his best friends, and one of the few people he's usually comfortable around.  Bren knows that Amy would never do anything to hurt him, intentionally, although worries that she's a bit too naive to always know the difference between helping and hurting him.
Natasha Simons Bren met Nat through Sophia; the two danced together in New York.  She and Bren get along rather well, and have bonded over their shared love of dance.

Acquaintances

Character Relationship
George Covington Brendan met George when he went to church regularly.  He doesn't really like him, and considers him to be little more than a pompous rich guy.
Martha Covington Bren met Martha when he went to church regularly.  He doesn't really like her, and considers her to be little more than an arrogant rich chick.
Nathan Covington Brendan knows Nathan mostly as George and Martha's son.   He assumes that he's exactly like his parents.
Wes Covington Bren knows Wes mostly as George and Martha's son.  He assumes that he's exactly like his parents.  Since Amy began dating him, he has taken to teasing her about it.
Casey Donovan Casey is Brendan's vet.
Robert Gray Robert was Bren's lawyer after his attack.  After the case was settled the two went on a couple dates, although nothing came of it.
Rosa Gray Rosa is Brendan's psychologist.
Connie Lindaugh Bren knows Connie as Corey's sister.
Estela Russell Brendan met Estela at work, shortly after his first failed date with Corey.  Because of his depression about the situation he flirted more than he would usually, even going so far as to entertain the idea of giving up on homosexuality and dating her.  Even though things have gone well with Corey since then, he still ended up in a situation where he felt obligated to go on a date with her.
Carrie Salinger Bren has known Carrie for more of his life.  While he and Aamy became close friends, Carrie has always been the older, distant sister type.
Eleanor Salinger Bren has known Eleanor for most of his life.  He considers her to be similar to a second mother to him, albeit one who has accepted him for who he is.
Frank Salinger Bren knows Frank as Amy's uncle.
Jody Salinger Bren knows Jody as Amy's cousin.
Richard Salinger Bren has known Richard for most of his life.  He considers him to be similar to a second father to him, albeit one who has accepted him for who he is.
Sam Woodstoves Bren knows Sam as Gerard's wife.

Work

Character Relationship
Luke Questal Bren thinks a good many things of Luke, none of which he would dare to ever say out loud.  He finds the man attractive, although Luke's homophobia is enough to make him avoid looking at him too much.  He fears what will happen to his job if Luke were to ever find out about his sexuality.
Gerard Woodstoves Despite the fact that Brendan finds Gerard to be little more than a homophobic, sexist redneck, he actually thinks that the man is a good boss.  He enjoys working for him, and fears that he'll be out of work if his sexuality ever comes out.

Enemies

Character Relationship
Darnell Johnson Darnell attacked Brendan with a baseball bat one night as he was leaving the Fun Bar.  The attack was determined to be a hate crime and has seriously affected Brendan's life since.  Even though he knows he could probably take Darnell in a fair fight, the other man still terrifies him.
Fletcher Montgomery Brendan ran into Fletcher at the gym on New Years Day.  The encounter triggered Brendan's paranoia, causing him to convince himself that Fletcher was a stalker, possibly with homophobic or terrorist connections.
